Colonial Clock of Imperial Germany

Around 1900, the colonies were considered the symbol of economic power and political prominence. Accordingly, Wilhelminian Germany proudly proclaimed, ‘The sun never sets on our Empire.’ Motivated by this maxim, the Badische Uhrenfabrik (Baden Clock Factory) in Furtwangen, set about designing the ‘Colonial Clock of Imperial Germany’. The chapter ring on the dial displays the local times in the German colonies. Germany, as the clock implies, seems to have found its ‘place in the sun’.
