100 Years of the Wristwatch – from 1900 to 1949

Modest beginnings. The technical prerequisites for the wristwatch already exist in the 19th century. Ornamental bracelets fitted with a watch are early forms of the wristwatch.  Yet, the wristwatch would not conquer the market until the beginning of the 20th century. As from 1900 many pocket watches are simply remodelled and made to be worn on the wrist using leather or metal straps.

Women in the vanguard. Women, chiefly working women, recognize early on how useful the wristwatch is. It is always being worn as a fashion accessory. At first, in the male world,  the new watch fashion meets with opposition, since wearing a bracelet around one’s wrist is considered effeminate. Sportsmen and members of the military are the first to appreciate the quick glance at the watch.

A variety of shapes. In the 1920s the wristwatch finally takes hold in the male world as well. Watchmakers begin experimenting with the shape of the watch exterior and making technical improvements to wristwatches. For women, the watch continues to be a fashion accessory It becomes smaller in size and is decorated with gems in some cases.

The breakthrough. In the 1930s rectangular models are considered modern. For the first time,  sales figures for  wristwatches exceed those of pocket watches. As from 1940 the round watch is rediscovered. Watches become flatter. The different lug shapes set new accents.
