Pocket Watches in the 18th Century

In the course of the 18th century, the pocket watch met with widespread popularity. It had become possible to increase its rate stability considerably, thanks to the spiral hairspring for the oscillating balance. The timepieces of the 18th century have a minute hand, sometimes even a second hand.

These pocket watches are enclosed in several cases. This way, the sensitive movement has a certain protection from dirt and shock. These thick watch cases with numerous lids are reminiscent of an onion, a fact which led to the term used for them.
