The Right Clock for Every Room

With the advent of industrial mass production in the 20th century, clock prices dropped considerably. Inasmuch as it had been customary to have only one clock per household in the 19th century, now “one clock per room” was considered the standard.

Accordingly, factories would make different clocks for each room of the house, resulting in longcase clocks, buffet clocks, wall clocks for the living area, alarm clocks for bedrooms as well as kitchen clocks. Their appearance would change depending on what was in fashion and they reflected the taste of their owners.

The clocks were chiefly created by designers in keeping with the styles of the times. Kitchen clocks with washable cases were designed in an enormous variety of basic shapes and colours to go with whatever was in vogue. Rope clocks for the parlour inspired seafaring memories in the era of Freddy Quinn’s hit songs.
