Surrer clocks are Black Forest clocks with a special striking mechanism. They strike the quarter-hours every 15 minutes, followed by the hour count.
The name Surrer is derived from the German word “surren”, which describes the buzzing sound of the striking mechanism: After the bell or gong spring strikes the hour, the striking mechanism keeps buzzing for a little while.
Due to their complex striking mechanism, Surrer movements tend to be quite large. There is only one Surrer movement known to date which has been incorporated into a small Jockele clock. The Museum was able to acquire this miniature clock with the well-appreciated support of the Association of Friends of the German Clock Museum. Thank you for that!
