The Black Forest clockmakers in the 19th century built wooden plate movements of different sizes, ranging from normal-sized movements to the smaller Schotten movements and, although produced in smaller quantities, the tiny Jockele and Sorg movements.
The movement of this clock is only 8.5cm in height – like that of a Jockele clock. Yet, it is still considered a small Sorg clock, although the size of Sorg movements usually doesn’t exceed a limit of 7cm. In contrast to other Sorg movements, this unique piece has an additional arbor with gear wheels, which is why it was enough to wind it up once a week instead of every day.
The initials JS are cast into one of the gear wheels, indicating that this clock was built by clockmaker Josef Sorg (junior), who is considered the inventor of this type of movement named after him.
This outstanding piece of Black Forest clock history was acquired by the Association of Friends of the German Clock Museum. Thank you so much for this wonderful Christmas present!
