Friedrich Gutkaes, Dresden, c. 1820

Friedrich Gutkaes (1785-1845) is one of the most significant German clockmakers. He would make pocket watches in keeping with the most modern principles of the time. His clock No. 14 has a bimetal compensated balance and chronometer escapement.
His most gifted student, who later became his son-in-law, was Ferdinand Adolph Lange (1815-1875), the founder of the pocket watch manufactory in the Saxon town of Glashütte.
