Escapement with Free-Floating Spring-Impulse Escapement

Prototype by Sigmund Riefler, Munich, 1890

As a young man, Siegmund Riefler (1847-1912) would dream of making the most precise clocks in the world. Thanks to a new type of escapement, he was able to make his dream come true. In 1890, his prototype was completed. In the early decades of the 20th century, Riefler was the leading maker of precision regulators. His clocks achieved accuracies of a few hundredths of a second per day.
